New York, NY (June 18, 2014) – Lippincott, a leading global branding firm, today announced that a cover designed by associate Elena Gil-Chang has been honored as a finalist in Ad Age’s 2014 Global Cover Contest. Gil-Chang’s design, “Watch This Space,” was selected as one of only twelve finalists out of close to 500 submissions from 40 countries around the world. As a finalist, her cover will be included inside the Ad Age issue distributed at the 2014 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and will also be featured on a billboard at the Majestic Hotel in Cannes during the event.
Now in its fifth year, the Ad Age Global Cover Contest is open to young designers age 30 and younger. The creative brief was to illustrate “the meaning of creativity in 2014.” Gil-Chang’s design, titled “Watch This Space,” takes inspiration from Velazquez’s seminal painting ‘Las Meninas,’ a work that has inspired a long line of tributes and academic discourse for its complex narrative, celebration of creativity, and self-awareness — a sentiment that foreshadows our own contemporary penchant for inclusive experiences. With a disruptive upload button in the center of the famed painting, Gil-Chang’s version recalls the universal accessibility and endlessly customizable nature of the digital era, inviting viewers to use their own creativity to fill in the blank.
“We are incredibly excited for Elena that her vision has been recognized by Ad Age,” said Connie Birdsall, Creative Director at Lippincott. “It is a true testament to her talent and creativity to be part of such a prestigious group of global designers.”
Gil-Chang is an associate in design in Lippincott’s New York office, where she focuses on logo and identity system development for clients across a range of industries, including Knowles, Quintiles, The Hershey Company, and Shutterstock. She has also been involved in a number of pro-bono projects, most recently having spearheaded the visual rebranding of Creative Art Works, a local non-profit that aims to empower young New Yorkers through art. Gil-Chang holds a B.A. in art history and studio art from Williams College and a certificate in design from the Instituto Europeo di Design.
